Europe


In Germany, a man has driven into a crowd of people in the capital, Berlin, killing one person and injuring around twelve people. The man was taken in by the authorities. According to the police, it’s unclear whether this was an accident or not.


Spain will host a NATO summit on June 29th and 30th. The summit will draft NATO’s “Strategic Concept” for the next ten years. Spain plans to encourage the inclusion of “hybrid threats”, including irregular migration, food security and terrorism.


Bulgaria’s prime minister Kiril Petkov has pledged to lead a minority government. The populist ITN party has quit the government over disagreements on budget and North Macedonia. Petkov says he is “optimistic” that his government can still deliver on its promises. However, some analysts think this could lead to new instability in Bulgaria.


Africa


In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Belgium’s King Phillipe has repeated his regrets about the exploitation, racism and violence during Belgium’s colonisation. Phillippe has been the first Belgian official to express regret for colonisation. He has not formally apologised to the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo.


In Sudan, farmers have warned that harvests may fail this season and next season. They are affected by the consequences of the military coup, including increasing fuel and fertiliser costs. According to Reuters, the government has failed to buy wheat as promised, after being cut off from international financing.


Americas


The United States interior department has said that it will phase out single-use plastics on public lands by 2032. This is part of a number of initiatives announced to recognise World Ocean Day.


American leaders gathered in the United States for the Summit of the Americas yesterday. The United States announced a new proposed economic partnership with Latin America, offering more engagement and investment.


The United States and South Korea have called North Korea’s recent missile tests “serious, unlawful provocations”. United States deputy secretary of state Wendy Sherman said the shared goal is the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.


“The United States, the Republic of Korea and Japan are fully and closely aligned on the DPRK. Our shared goal remains achieving the completed denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Since last Sept, the DPRK has sig increase the pace and scale of its ballistic missile launches. Each of these launches violates multiple UN security council resolutions and poses a serous threat to the security of the region and of the entire international community.”


Asia


In Afghanistan, the Taliban has introduced new uniforms for the police force. The Taliban aims to move away from using insurgent military forces for law and order. The colour of uniforms has been changed to dark blue, and Afghanistan’s republican flag has been replaced with the Taliban’s Islamic Emirate flag.


China’s United Nations Ambassador Zhang Jun has said that the United States needs to ease sanctions on North Korea and end joint military exercises with South Korea.

In Pakistan, at least 22 people have been killed after a van fell into a ravine. According to officials, the accident seemed to be due to excess speed on the highway, but the exact cause is not known.


And New Zealand has released a draft plan to put a price on agricultural emissions caused by sheep and cattle burps. New Zealand would become the first country to make farmers pay for emissions from livestock.
